Wimbledon final Kvitova defeats Azarenka

WIMBLEDON, England - Petra Kvitova rode her big serve right into the Wimbledon final, beating Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 Thursday.

The Czech left-hander had 40 winners and 14 unforced errors, while Azarenka had only nine winners and seven unforced errors.

In the first set, Kvitova twice broke Azarenka's serve and saved the only break point she faced. At 3-1, Azarenka had two break points, but Kvitova saved them both and then won the next two points to make it 4-1.

Petra Kvitova became the first Czech woman to reach the finals of Wimbledon since 1998 after the 21- year-old beat Victoria Azarenka of Belarus.

Kvitova defeated the fourth-seeded Azarenka, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 on Centre Court. Azarenka could only convert 1 of her eight break points.

Kvitova had reached last year’s Wimbledon semifinals, where she lost to eventual championSerena Williams, having never previously won a match on grass.

Before today, the last left-handed woman to reach the championship match at Wimbledon was former Czech and nine-time champion, Martina Navratilova in 1994. Navratilova, who had been Kvitova’s idol while growing up, watched today’s match from the royal box.

Azarenka was playing in her first major semifinal, after losing quarterfinals at 2009 Roland Garros, 2009 Wimbledon, 2010 Australian Open and this year’s French Open. Sharapova reached the semifinals at Wimbledon without dropping a set.
