So Yeon Ryu won the U.S. Women's Open on Monday, sinking a clutch birdie on the final hole to force a playoff and beating Korean compatriot Hee Kyung Seo with another birdie on the second extra hole.

The countrywomen went to a three-hole aggregate playoff beginning at the 16th hole, when both players had pars. Ryu pounced as she drained a 10-footer for birdie and a two-stroke swing.

Ryu finished in style with another birdie at 18. Seo, 25, also bogeyed the 17th hole Sunday. She is an LPGA Tour rookie with 11 wins on the Korean Tour.

Ryu Wins U.S. Women's Open in Monday Finish

After finishing tied in regulation at 3-under 281, South Koreans So Yeon Ryu and Hee Kyung Seo went to a three-hole playoff, with the lowest aggregate score deemed the winner of the U.S. Women's Open on the East Course at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo.

After both players parred the par-3 16th, Ryu birdied the final two holes - the par-5 17 and par-4 18th - to sew up the championship, which had a Monday finish due to rain delays in all four rounds.

The win was worth $585,000; Seo took home $350,000.

Ryu was stunned after the victory. "I won the KLPGA tournament six times, but no major. With three holes to play Monday morning and a stroke behind her countrywoman, Ryu managed a crucial birdie on the 18th hole for a 69 to force the overtime session.

I hope to win this tournament, but I think I did best. "(Sunday) was tough," said the 14-time LPGA winner. Defending champion Paula Creamer shot a fourth-round 75 and was tied for 15th at 6-over 290.

Creamer enjoyed her reign and was disappointed she couldn't retain the biggest trophy in women's golf.

MLB All-Star Game

Nobody appreciates being an MLB All-Star Game more than a first-timer, and Pablo Sandoval and Ryan Vogelsong of the Giants and Oakland's Gio Gonzalez demonstrated that Monday.

Long after the National League finished batting practice at Chase Field, Vogelsong remained on the field. Sixteen players, including no-show Derek Jeter, have bowed out of tonight's All-Star Game, but Sandoval, Vogelsong and Gonzalez wouldn't dare miss it. Vogelsong was told by NL manager Bruce Bochy that he'd pitch only in extra innings, and AL manager Ron Washington said Gonzalez at most could be a situational lefty and face one batter.

The AL's utility guy is Young.

British Grand Prix at Silverstone

Fernando Alonso ended Ferrari's victory drought by charging to his team's first victory of the year in the British Grand Prix.

Championship leader Sebastian Vettel and poleman Mark Webber had to settle for the remaining podium spots in the two Red Bulls, with Vettel just holding on in a huge late battle between the pair.

The German's immediate burst of pace convinced everyone else to come in, with Webber, Alonso and Hamilton choosing lap 12 while Vettel and Massa stayed out till lap 13.

Alonso initially struggled to get temperature into his slicks and not only fell away from the Red Bulls, but lost third to a charging Hamilton into Copse.

With his team instructing him to save fuel, Hamilton backed off and lost third to Webber, who then caught Vettel and mounted a huge late effort to overtake his team-mate until ordered to 'maintain the gap' on the final lap.

Alonso also got past his Ferrari team mate Massa, while both Hamilton and Michael Schumacher (Mercedes) each made up three places on the opening lap.

On lap 2, Hamilton got past Paul di Resta (Force India-Mercedes) as Massa got past Jenson Button (McLaren-Mercedes) and was followed through by Hamilton, up to fifth place in just two laps after starting tenth.

Vettel pitted on the next lap for fresh tyres. McLaren responded, pulling in Hamilton on the next lap and although their work was slick, Vettel flashed past as Hamilton rejoined the track from the pit lane.

Alonso now had a 13.1 sec lead over Webber who was 3.9 sec ahead of Button who was in turn followed by Massa (+23.4), Vettel (+24.4) and Hamilton (+27.4).

Third-placed Webber was also closing the gap to team mate Vettel, just one second behind on the penultimate lap. As the final lap started, Webber was challenging Vettel for second while Massa was challenging Hamilton for fourth.

Australia exacted a diabolically appropriate revenge for their Commonwealth Games loss to New Zealand last year in New Delhi with an astonishing 58-57 win over the Silver Ferns in extra time to win the world netball championship in Singapore.

Goal shoot Caitlin Bassett sealed the match with the second period of extra-time just about to run out to sink the match-winning goal for a heart-stopping win.

Aitken opted for extra height in the defensive circle, Leana de Bruin matching up at the back on Diamonds shooter Catherine Cox while Silver Ferns captain Casey Williams was charged with keeping goal attack Natalie Medhurst under wraps.

Australian coach Norma Plummer sprung no surprises, testing New Zealand shooter Irene van Dyk from the first whistle with the intimidating Susan Fuhrmann, while Julie Corletto went head-to-head with Silver Ferns playmaker Maria Tutaia at goal attack and the abrasive Mo'onia Gerrard started up at wing defence.

2011 NBA Draft Wrap Up

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Five days ago, the Cavaliers drafted Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson with the first and fourth picks in the NBA draft.

Now that the smoke has cleared, let's look back at what transpired. Here are some observations on the 2011 version of the annual event.

NEW 2011 NHL Draft

ST. PAUL — The crowd inside the XCel Center was still buzzing from a flurry of trades Saturday and Sunday when a 20-year veteran of National Hockey League entry drafts muttered “this is like an old-time draft, with all the deals.”

The Philadelphia Flyers got the ball rolling on Thursday. The Flyers were hardly done there, dealing away Mike Richards to Los Angeles Jeff Carter to Columbus. Voracek, one of countless former Blue Jackets first round picks who has fought with coaches, has untapped talent. After unloading the huge Mike Richards and Carter contracts, the Flyers may also be competing with the New York Rangers for Brad Richards when free agency begins on Friday. Columbus, meanwhile, has also dramatically changed direction. The Blue Jackets need Carter, who was stunned by the trade, to be Rick Nash’s set-up man. It’s suspected the Sharks aren’t finished trading.

The Panthers, who will struggle to reach the NHL’s salary cap floor of $49 million, added Campbell’s heavy contract in a deal for Rusty Olesz. Campbell has five years and $35.714 left on his deal.

That deal wasn’t a complete surprise.

There were only flickering echoes of last year's epic around Court Three. Isner took control of the match by winning the first-set and Mahut never looked like fighting back in a subdued atmosphere on a windy Court Three.

No. 16 Nicolas Almagro 7-6(3), 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 6-3. Returning to the site of his epic match against Nicolas Mahut, Court 18 wasn't nearly as magical for John Isner in his second round match on Day 4 of Nicolas Mahut.

Not only did Isner not break Almagro's serve at any point, he never even had a break point opportunity. After winning match point, Almagro went nuts, screaming and fistpumping maniacally toward his box.

Incidentally, Mohamed isn’t mentioned on the commemorative plaque which nows adorns the outside of Court 18.

Forget Centre Court, the most sought-after ticket at Wimbledon on Tuesday was for Court 17. Every point Niland won was greeted by a huge roar that could be heard over on Court 1. Fans wore green Team Niland T-shirts and one was wrapped in an Ireland flag. wimbledon.com

Robin Soderling's ambition of breaking up the famous four who dominate the men's game is still intact after he recovered from two sets down to beat Lleyton Hewitt 6-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday.

Yeah, it's very tough. Federer, the third man in the Big Four, coasted into the third round, beating Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 in Centre Court's final match, every one being played under the roof.

Federer, who was playing "indoors" on Centre Court for the first time, managed only nine aces but he played far more service winners, thrashing down strokes on which his opponent managed only to place a flailing racket. I thought conditions were fantastic. [Mannarino] did well, he shows signs of good potential, unusual lefty-play, maybe it took me some time to get used to him but I thought I played some really good tennis."

Federer will next play David Nalbandian, an Argentinian who, he said, once made him panic when both men were younger. Djokovic beat Kevin Anderson of South Africa 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. Two straight-set wins.

The Swede world No.5, Robin Soderling will be clashing with former Wimbledon champion, Lleyton Hewitt in the second round of the Wimbledon 2011.

The previous encounter between both the player’s was on the hard court match in Cincinnati TMS tournament in 2010, where the top seeded player for Swede, Soderling has defeated Hewitt in a three set thriller with a score line of 4-6 6-3 and 7-5.

While, Lleyton Hewitt t has even worked hard against the Japanese player, Kei Nishikori.

No. 1 in NBA draft ‎2011

Kyrie Irving wants to be the cornerstone of the Cavaliers' franchise.

In a mildly shocking move at No. 4 overall, the Cavs selected Texas power forward Tristan Thompson.

Cavs general manager Chris Grant said they identified the two players early in the process.

The Cavs added the consensus No. 1 player in the 2011 draft.

Tonight, it came true as the Milwaukee Bucks drafted him with the No. 10 overall pick. Fredette emerged a few hours after his selection as a member of the Kings.

“(The contract) was a little thing that helped keep my mind straight,” Fredette said. At BYU, Fredette averaged 28.9 points, scoring 30 or more on 16 occasions. The Bucks received Stephen Jackson, Charlotte’s Shaun Livingston, Udrih and the rights to former Tennessee forward Tobias Harris, who was Charlotte’s No. 19 pick. The Bobcats locked up the No. 7 overall pick, Bismack Biyombo, and Corey Maggette from Milwaukee.

The Kings acquired guard John Salmons from Milwaukee and the rights to Fredette.

Thompson, who played at St. Benedict’s in Newark during his sophomore and part of his junior year will join former teammate Samardo Samuels and St. Patrick guard Kyrie Irving in Cleveland.

In an NBA draft full of surprises, the next great Canadian phenom may have provided the biggest.

Brampton’s Tristan Thompson, a tireless worker, ace rebounder and highly-regarded person for his level of maturity and personality, elevated himself to unprecedented heights when he was chosen fourth overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in one of the more shocking developments of Thursday’s draft.

The 6-9 power forward, who cut his basketball teeth in the United States prep school system before attending the University of Texas for one season, became the highest-drafted player ever from the Greater Toronto Area.

“We’re excited that people, I guess, call us pioneers,” Thompson said during the pre-draft process. It’s exciting that Cory and I led the way for a younger generation, I’m excited.

“Just ‘welcome to the family,’” was what Thompson got from Scott. I know a lot of people never expected it . . . it just shows the wonders that hard work puts in.”

Two matches were played under the retractable roof . That included two-time Wimbledon semifinalist Murray's 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0 victory over 59th-ranked Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain. As is tradition, the defending champion opened proceedings on Center Court with Rafael Nadal recovering from an early hiccup to coast past American Michael Russell in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-2. Other seeds to advance to round 2 were Gael Monfils, Mardy Fish, Stanislas Wawrinka and Milos Raonic.

Russell had Nadal under pressure in the Spanish maestro's opening service game and though Rafa survived a breakpoint, he was eventually broken by the ebullient American for a 4-2 lead. A break of serve though counts for naught unless consolidated, and Rafa prevented that from happening as he broke right back in the following game. Monfils beat German Matthias Bachinger 6-4, 7-6(3), 6-3 while Mardy Fish quelled the challenge of Marcel Granollers 7-6(3), 7-6(5), 6-4. Five time champion Venus Williams showed glimpses of her championship winning form by coasting into round 2 at the expense of all 6 feet 3 inches of Akgul Amanmuradova.

The opening set was decided by a solitary break in the 4th game when Amanmuradova played a poor drop shot at breakpoint. Venus held serve with relative ease until she was put under slight pressure in the 9th game while serving for the set. Out on court 1, 2nd seed Vera Zvonareva, a beaten finalist in both the ladies' singles and doubles event last year, started like a house on fire handing 20-year American Alison Riske an opening set bagel. Also falling in the first round was 28th seeded Russian Ekaterina Makarova, beaten in arguably the ladies match of the day thus far, 2-6, 6-1, 8-6 by American teenager Christina McHale.

CAN - Quillan Roberts, 87’ All it took was an unlikely goal by ‘keeper Quillan Roberts, but Canada finally have their first-ever point in 14 matches at the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Roberts, the Toronto FC Academy shot-stopper who started in place of injured number one Maxime Crépeau, capped off a wild and fast-paced match with a 60-yard floater that bounced over the head of England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, giving Canada their second goal in a 2-2 draw with the English on Wednesday night.

Turgott’s strike set the stage for the unlikely heroics from Roberts, whose goal came at the tail end of a furious spell of Canadian pressure to equalize.

England’s international soccer (football) team had a glaring issues with their goalkeeping during the 2010 World Cup last summer in South Africa. The goal by Roberts came in the 87th minute and helped Canada earn their first point of the tournament, via their improbable 2-2 draw against England.

Gold Cup Nuws U.S

The United States and Mexico both turned to their stars to advance to the Gold Cup final.

The United States beat El Tri 2-1 in 2007, and Mexico won 5-0 in the 2009 final.

"It was a really good team effort," American coach Bob Bradley said. Freddy Adu made a long-awaited return to American soccer in the second half, and set up the winning play with a long, slanting pass to Donovan, who played in his 27th consecutive Gold Cup match to extend his own record.

Panama lost to the Americans in the knockout stage for the fourth straight time. Coach Julio Dely Valdes said his team surprised the Americans in their earlier match, and the U.S. team was more focused this time.

Adu played for the national team for the first time since 2009. "The opportunity (Wednesday) was earned on his part. The United States is unbeaten in 22 of its last 24 games in the Gold Cup, a tournament with 12 teams from Central and North American and the Caribbean. The Americans improved to 7-1-2 against Panama all-time.

Mexico had trouble with Honduras in the semifinal, with neither team scoring through 90 minutes of regulation.

De Nigris and Javier "El Chicharito" Hernandez scored off corner kicks early in overtime to propel Mexico into its third straight Gold Cup final.

Pablo Barrera assisted on both goals for Mexico on Wednesday.

What might have been surprising, though, is the difficulty both teams had in keeping their date, with the U.S. squeaking past Panama, 1-0, on Clint Dempsey's goal late in the second half and Mexico needing overtime to beat Honduras, 2-0, on goals by Aldo De Nigris and Javier Hernandez.

After scoring a tournament-high 14 goals in group play, Mexico has been held scoreless in three of the four halves it has played since then.

For Adu, 22, who had not played for the national team since the 2009 Gold Cup, setting up the game-winning score offered a bit of redemption.

It was his fourth goal in five games.

Six minutes later, Hernandez scored his seventh goal of the Gold Cup, finishing off another play that began with a corner to De Nigris.
